Krátce po uzavření dohody o vzájemné spolupráci mezi automobilkami AM
General a General Motors v roce 2000 byl sestaven tým, jenž měl za úkol
prozkoumat možnosti vytvoření nového prototypu vozidla, které by bylo
civilizovanější, než stávající verze "velkého" modelu HUMMER s
označením H1. Podmínkou bylo, že tento vůz nesmí ztratit nic z odolnosti a
svých schopností v terénu, které patří mezi největší přednosti vozu HUMMER H1.
Výsledkem úsilí se stal prototyp zcela nového vozu s označením HUMMER
H2, který byl veřejnosti poprvé představen na prestižní automobilové
výstavě North American International Auto Show 2000.
Výsledek spolupráce mezi oběma automobilkami jasně ukázal, jakým směrem se bude
vyvíjet výroba a vývoj terénních automobilů HUMMER v budoucnosti. Koncept
navržený v moderním stylu si zachovává klasické a časem prověřené
charakteristické rysy vozů HUMMER.
Krátce po představení prototypu se rozhodlo o sériové výrobě modelu H2, s
níž se začalo během roku
Za tímto účelem byly za 250 milionů USD postaveny v blízkosti současného výrobního podniku automobilky AM General ve městě Mishawaka (stát Indiana) zcela nové výrobní linky, jejichž výrobní kapacita dosahuje 40 000 modelů H2 ročně.

Ani tento původní šestilitrový motor se však nezdál technikům u
GeigerCars.de dostatečně výkonný, a tak jej nahradili jednotkou z posledního
modelu Chevrolet Corvette. Ještě předtím si s ním ovšem trochu
pohráli. Byl převrtán na objem 7011 cm3 a doplněn mechanickým
kompresorem. Hlavy válců byly pečlivě obrobeny, osazeny sportovní vačkové
hřídele a zesílen jejich pohon. Výfukové potrubí je kompletně nové a vše
završuje přeprogramovaná řídící jednotka. Výsledkem je výkon 515 kW (700 k) při
5500 ot/min a točivý moment 904 Nm při 4260 ot/min. Tato síla umožňuje 3,1 tuny
těžkému offroadu zrychlit z 0-
